[the occasional] Dumb Sketch

Backing away from the daily sketching of 2015, to observe more slowly and acutely.

Woman Looking Up–#113

WomansFace-04222015

I tried again to not outline first, but to locate and put on paper the negative shapes I see. But I’ve got to find some better way to bring that together. In the photo she was looking up. But now that I’ve rotated my paper, I see that I’ve scattered her eyes, eyebrows and lips in a very strange way. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow’s drawing.

You’re improving though. No doubt about it. Keep the faith!

No doubt. But drawing by drawing it is hard to see.

My suggestion is take your pencil or a soft colored pencil on good drawing paper like Stonehenge, and like, tickle the color on to the page. Barely use any pressure and get those shadows in. Maybe try drawing a row of a bunch of squares, joined together and try making an almost white square, then the next darkest, then the next til you get to black. So you have a scale to use now. Then look for the light and dark values and try placing them. Go to the lightest first and work from there. I wish I could tell you more, but this is what works for me.

It’s a very mysterious expression, regardless of whether it looks like the photo. Are you drawing from the photo placed upside-down? Good idea! I’ll have to add it to my list of ways to draw something.

Might help to look at the shadow first. Her expression comes through in this – and that’s good!

Look at the values of the subject – where is it light, where is it dark … use the pencil to shade and indicate shadow (you said you were trying not to outline). Think of the graphite as dark light…
